Over the past few years a number of methods of converting video into digital format have
been developed. Earlier methods include MJPEG and MPEG4.

The latest algorithm is H.264. Its' introduction has reduced the amount of resources that video signals and storage require.

This means that attaching an IP camera to an existing LAN will not have such an adverse affect on network loadings. H.264 can reduce bandwidth and storage requirements by up to 75%, however this is heavily dependent on the type of scene being viewed.
